Jamaican Beef Patty Delight (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

→ Dough

01 - 1 tsp turmeric
02 - ½ cup cold shortening
03 - 1 tsp salt
04 - 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
05 - ½ cup cold butter, cubed
06 - ½ cup ice-cold water

→ Filling

07 - ½ tsp black pepper
08 - ½ tsp cayenne pepper, optional
09 - 1 tbsp curry powder
10 - 1 tbsp soy sauce
11 - 1 lb ground beef
12 - 1 small onion, finely chopped
13 - ½ cup beef broth
14 - ½ cup breadcrumbs
15 - 1 tsp allspice
16 - 1 tsp thyme
17 - 2 cloves garlic, minced
18 - 1 tsp salt
19 - 1 egg, for egg wash

# Instructions:

01 - Start by mixing the flour with salt and turmeric in a bowl. Take the cold butter and shortening, and work them into the mix until it resembles crumbs. Slowly pour in ice-cold water, knead until smooth, then wrap it up and chill for 30 minutes.
02 - On medium heat, cook the beef in a pan until browned. Toss in onion, garlic, and spices like thyme, allspice, cayenne, black pepper, and salt. Stir in soy sauce and curry powder, then add broth. Let it simmer for 10 minutes before adding breadcrumbs. Let the mixture thicken and cool.
03 - Set your oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll the chilled dough flat and cut into circles about 6 inches wide. Place 2 tablespoons of the beef filling on one half, fold over the other side, and crimp the edges with a fork. Brush with beaten egg.
04 - Line a baking tray and place the patties on it. Pop them into the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until you see a lovely golden-brown color.

# Notes:

01 - Keep the butter and shortening icy cold for a super flaky crust. Don't overmix to make sure the dough stays soft.
02 - Want it spicy? Add more cayenne pepper or try Scotch bonnet for that classic touch.
03 - Refrigerate baked patties for a max of 3 days. Freeze uncooked ones and bake straight from the freezer at 375°F for about 30-35 minutes.
